The Indiana Hoosiers won their first-ever college football national championship by defeating the Miami Hurricanes 27-21 in the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 19, 2026. Under coach Curt Cignetti, the team finished with a 16-0 record, becoming the first 16-0 team in modern college football history.
The Final Game: Indiana defeated Miami 27-21 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, with a decisive interception by Jamari Sharpe in the final minute.
Record-Setting Season: The 16-0 record marked the first time a team achieved this feat since Yale in 1894.
Key Players: Quarterback Fernando Mendoza was named MVP for his performance in the championship game.
Path to the Title: IU reached the title game by defeating Alabama (38-3 in the Rose Bowl) and Oregon (56-22 in the Peach Bowl).
