In the 1976 Formula One season, Mario Andretti drove the Lotus 77. The car, initially struggled, but Andretti and the team worked to improve its performance throughout the season. Despite the 77's limitations, Andretti secured a win in the rainy Japanese Grand Prix. 

The 77's performance picked up in the latter half of the season. It was particularly well-suited to tracks with long corners, such as Anderstorp where Andretti led before an engine failure.
