The 1939 Indy 500 was won by Wilbur Shaw in a Maserati 8CTF, making it the first foreign car to win the race in 20 years. The race was marked by a tragic crash on lap 109 where reigning champion Floyd Roberts was killed after his car went through the wall following a collision with Bob Swanson's car. Another driver, Chet Miller, was also involved but survived with minor injuries.
