 The 1939 Indy 500 was won by Wilbur Shaw in a Maserati 8CTF, making it the first foreign car to win the race in 20 years. The race was marked by a tragic crash on lap 109 where reigning champion Floyd Roberts was killed after his car went through the wall following a collision with Bob Swanson's car. Another driver, Chet Miller, was also involved but survived with minor injuries.

Key events
Tragic crash: A three-car incident on lap 109 led to the death of 1938 winner Floyd Roberts. Bob Swanson's car lost control, and Roberts' car went through the wooden outer wall after making contact. 
Other involved drivers: Chet Miller was also involved in the crash, his car flipping and catching fire. He survived with minor injuries. Bob Swanson was ejected from his car but survived. 
Spectator injuries: Two spectators were also injured by flying debris from the crash. 
First rear-engined car: The first rear-engined car qualified for the race, though it did not finish at the top.
