Wilbur Shaw won the 1940 Indianapolis 500, becoming the first driver to win the race in consecutive years. He drove the same Maserati 8CTF he had won with in 1939 and also joined Louis Meyer as the second three-time winner. Shaw's victory was achieved with an average speed of (114.277) mph, though the final 50 laps were run under caution due to rain. . Shaw first participated in the 1927 Indianapolis 500. He eventually won the Indianapolis 500 race three times.
